Please keep in mind that the blanket you are making may become a child's cherished possession, comforting them for years. Please make your blanket as if it is a gift for someone you know and love.
This is a no-sew fleece blanket kit. It contains 1.5 yards of fleece with sample fringe cut at both ends of two opposite sides of the fleece, our special tag already attached, a fringe cutting template and directions.
We try to make the process very simple and to make sure our Blanket Angels get good directions. But sometimes things go awry, and we receive completed blankets that need some TLC before we can give them to a child in foster care.
The blankets below illustrate several problems that we ask Blanket Angels to avoid:
selvedges not removed from fleece you have purchased
fringe cut on all four blanket sides (fringe on TWO OPPOSITE SIDES ONLY)
fringe cut into the pre-attached tag
fringe pieces that are tied together, resulting in a blanket that will not lie flat
If you cut fringe only on the 2 edges where the sample fringe are cut, you will not cut into the pre-attached tag.
Cut fringe on 2 opposite sides. Sample fringe for you to follow are already cut so you avoid the side where the tag is sewn. Don't tie fringe together.
Don't cut fringe on the side where the tag is sewn - or the side opposite. Cut only on the 2 sides where sample fringe have been cut.
The selvedges (narrow, tightly woven borders on the ends of the fabric that prevent it from unravelling) have not been removed from this fleece, resulting in fringe with ends that aren't smooth. Please cut off the selvedges before you begin cutting fringe. This step is not necessary when you use an MVOB fleece kit. We remove the selvedges for you.
Don't cut fringe on the side where the tag has been sewn. Follow the sample fringe that have been cut on 2 sides of the fleece. Tie knots about 1/2" from blanket edge to avoid bunching.
IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER ABOUT OUR FLEECE BLANKETS:
Use only one layer of fleece.
Cut fringe at TWO opposite ends, not all four sides.*
Tie one knot in each fringe. Do not tie fringe together.
Use the 1" x 4" fringe cutting template we provide to avoid uneven-length fringe.
Use our 1" x 4" fringe cutting template to avoid cutting fringe of different lengths.
Please keep blankets away from areas where they can pick up pet hair.
Special tag is already attached. Never cut into the tag.
On the tag, fill in YOUR first name after "Handmade by."
On the tag, LEAVE THE TOP LINE BLANK for the child to complete.
On the tag, add a short note to the child who receives your blanket. Examples
* If you should choose to use two layers of fleece (not recommended) you must fringe and double knot all four sides of the blanket so that the two pieces of fleece are joined together securely.
Other problems to avoid
Please do not complete the first line of the tag. The first line should be left BLANK so that the child who receives it can add their name.
Be sure to add the Blanket Angel's first name on the second line after the "Handmade by" heart. The personal touch of an individual name is preferable to the name of a group or organization.
At holiday times, please DON'T write holiday-themed messages on your tags. We cannot know when a child may receive your blanket. We want to include messages that can be comforting and appropriate no matter what the season or the child's culture may be.
While we understand your seasonal good wishes, please understand that it may be several months before your blanket makes its way into the hands of a child. We will have to replace this tag with one with a "timeless" message. Thank you.
We cherish our Blanket Angels and the essential work they do to support our mission to provide handmade blankets to children in foster care. Thanks for your careful attention to making the best quality blankets possible.
